About Us

The Cavendish Green Mountain Snow Fleas Snowmobile Club was started in the Fall of 1972 by a small group of local snowmobile enthusiasts and was quickly affiliated with the statewide umbrella organization VAST. groomerWe are located in Southeast Vermont in the township of Cavendish where snowmobile riders experience a variety of scenic views including the Green Mountains, Black River, meadows and forested land. The club manages 34 miles of well-groomed corridor and secondary trails that connect directly to trails managed by other clubs providing a wonderful seamless riding experience. Our Tucker and drag system along with our dedicated local groomer operators take pride in grooming our well-signed trail system.

Our club name and logo utilizes the snow flea, Hypogastrura nivicola, an insect about 1-2 mm (1/2 inch) long which actually exists. 180px-Snow_Flea_close_up_cropThe snow fleas which are actually a species of springtail can catapult themselves in a random direction much like a jumping flea by releasing two tail-like “spring” projections. Although active all year long snow fleas produce an anti-freeze protein which allows them to operate at sub-zero environments in January through March. They may be seen on the snow particularly under small trees hopping over the surface. Some club members have observed a amazing similarity between these insects and themselves.

The heart of our club is its small core of active volunteers who spend countless hours cutting trails, brushing, clearing deadfall, signing, building bridges, installing culverts, and completing the myriad of other tasks required to sustain a smoothly operating trail system. On winter weekends the snow fleas also operate a cook shack at the intersection of snowmobile routes 126 C and corridor route 12 N/S (WR 43) near Twenty Mile Stream Road. In addition to food and drink, trail maps, tee shirts, and good information is available as well as a club-sponsored Porta Pottie. All profits and donations are used to defray trail maintenance expenses. In addition to the amenities offered at the cook shack, the snow fleas sponsor safety courses for new riders, inform its members of pending issues and legislation affecting our sport, and is active in landowner relations. Volunteers are always welcome. Please visit the contact us page to get involved. Club meetings are held monthly in October through March. Snowmobilers wishing to attend any of our meetings should check the Vermont Journal and the Green Mountain Outlook for the schedule or contact us for time and place.

Snowmobile enthusiasts that wish to ride our trail network and all of Vermont will need to compete a TMA form. More information here.

We hope to see you riding his winter on our trails in beautiful southern Vermont.
